simple ways to add touches of fall to your home

Welcome! And If you are visiting from Sand Dollar Lane a big wave to you!

I am so happy to be participating in this Celebrating Fall Home Tour Series with some of my favorite bloggers (kinda feels like I’m sitting at the cool kids table)! I am sure you are going to Fall in love with all the beautiful inspiration everyone is sharing (see what I did there??) so be sure and head over to see what my friends are up to.

Today I am sharing simple ways to add touches of Fall to your home. So let’s get started.

LAKE HOUSE FALL TOUR

First let me say my husband and I are incredibly blessed to have a house on a lake that we love spending Fall weekends at. No matter what I do inside the house decor wise it takes a backseat to the incredible views right outside our windows.

I’m not sure if it’s because of the stunning views outside or the oversized camel colored leather sofa that resides in the middle of our home, but I stay away from using traditional Fall colors and instead gravitate to adding pieces that give the hint of Fall. Fall decor for me is simple and minimal. I love to decorate with fresh flowers, plants and other organic materials that add texture and ease the house away from summer and into cooler weather.

TEXTURE

The first thing I do when the temps turn cooler here in Michigan is to switch out the textiles. I have a few darker rugs I use this time of year as well as a sisal rug that I put out in the Fall - in the summer here it’s all about bare floors and cotton rugs because of all the sand. I also change my pillows from lightweight cotton to more luxe feeling fabrics such as velvet (which I am crushing on right now). Lastly, I switch out our summer throws which work for as a light wrap for breezy summer evenings to chunky knits more suitable for cuddling up for a movie night.

COLOR

I like to add color with flowers in berry, magenta and rust with touches of greenery. I use copper, woods and organic vases to add to the Fall feel. Farmer’s Markets and Trader Joe’s keep me supplied at reasonable prices. Sunflowers are my oldest daughter’s favorite flowers. They are such a happy flower. I use them in the weeks of late summer/early fall as the perfect transition.

Another inexpensive trick is a simple bowl of apples or pears as a centerpiece.

Hints of pumpkins

I don’t skip pumpkins entirely. I love white pumpkins and the new vintage blue and grey varieties that have been popping up over the last few years. I mix them with plants and succulents and woods so they feel fall like without the traditional look. I place mini pumpkins throughout the house very sparingly in unexpected places. Sometimes I’ll do an entire vignette on a bookcase. Always emphasizing the neutral.

Scented Candles

The single thing that signals a change of seasons in my home is scented candles. I burn candles year round. Citrus and light scents such as tangerine and grapefruit in the spring and moving towards scents like pear and apple-cinnamon in the Fall. Warm vanilla anything is my all time favorite. I’ve linked a few favorites I’m burning now. Pear candle and Vanilla/Bourbon.

I love deeper, warmer scents in my home once the weather turns cooler.
